The Rose of England

[Rose of England tablecloth pinned out for blocking]

This cloth was worked in Coats & Clark's 6-cord mercerized crochet cotton, size 30 (the pattern calls for size 60), on US size 1 needles. I made it in 1978 in Arlington, Virginia, where we lived while my husband was working for a year in Crystal City. It won a special award at the Virginia State Fair as best overall of all knitted and crocheted pieces.

This tablecloth is one of the masterpieces of lace knitting. It was designed by Marianne Kinzel, and published in her Second Book of Modern Lace Knitting, which is still in print in an inexpensive edition published by Dover books. If you aspire to lace knitting you must buy Kinzel's two books--they're widely available from lace and knitting suppliers, and can often be found in large bookstores.

I used this cloth in my photo essay on how to block lace.
