Diamond Ring Mesh

This pattern is the result of my exploration of the new trick I picked up from a Burda doily pattern.

It is a very open lace with strong diagonal lines enclosing a ring in each diamond-shaped space. It's a 7-stitch, 12-row repeat, and is a fairly stable (ie, non-stretchy) fabric. It would certainly be suitable for something like curtains. A detail is shown at the right.

It needs an edging of at least a single stitch on each side, as some rows end with a YO. The chart will show a K on each edge; the written instructions will say "edge" instead.

Detail of the Diamond Ring mesh pattern

Symbols:
| = knit
O = YO
/ = k 2 tog
\ = slip, slip, knit together (SSK)
V = knit into front and back leg of stitch
A = sl 1, k 2 tog, psso
X (chart) or 3/2 (written) represent the trick described above, namely: Slip one, knit 2 together, YO, pass the slipped stitch over both the knit stitch and the YO.

Pattern: Cast on a multiple of 7 stitches, plus at least one edge stitch on each side. A single repeat plus 2 edge stitches is shown. The stitches in brackets are not part of the repeat, but are worked at the end of the rows instead of the final stitch shown in the repeat. See the written instructions if this is not clear.

All even numbered rows are purled plain.

        --repeat---

|       O / O A O \   O   |   Row 9
|  [\]  X O \ O / O   /   |   Row 7
|       | \ O V O /   |   |   Row 5
|  [\]  A O \ O / O   /   |   Row 3
|       O / O X O \   O   |   Row 1
Written version:

Note: "edge" can be as simple as k1, as in the charted example. (Another one, shown in the bookmark: cast on 5 for each edge. Work right edge as k1, k2 tog, yo, k1, and left edge as k2, yo, ssk, k1.)

Cast on multiple of 7 plus at least one edge stitch each side. Repeat between *'s. "3/2" is the trick described above (3 stitches reduced to 2).

Row 1-- edge; YO, *SSK, YO, 3/2, YO, k2tog, YO*; edge.
Row 3-- edge; k2tog, *YO, k2tog, YO, SSK, YO, (sl 1, k2tog, psso)* (on last repeat, end SSK instead of (sl 1, k2tog, psso)); edge.
Row 5-- edge; k1, *k2tog, YO, k in front and back of st, YO, SSK, k1*; edge.
Row 7-- edge; k2tog, *YO, k2tog, YO, SSK, YO, 3/2* (on last repeat, end SSK instead of 3/2); edge.
Row 9-- edge; YO, *SSK, YO, (sl 1, k2tog, psso), YO, k2tog, YO*; edge.
Row 11-- edge; k1, *YO, SSK, k1, k2tog, YO, k in front and back of st* (on last repeat, end k1 instead of k in front and back of st); edge.
