Cut off about 3.5 yards (3 meters) of the yarn and separate the plies into two 2-ply yarns. This yarn is very thin, and the socks are quite tight. There's little chance of getting any shoes on over them if this isn't true.
These are knit on American size 00 (1.75mm) double pointed needles. If you have never made socks before, try one sock first using larger yarn and needles. It takes me about three hours to knit a pair of these socks.
k = knit
p = purl
SSK = slip one stitch as if to knit, slip another as if to knit, knit them together
p2tog = purl two stitches together
dec = decrease
instep = top of foot
Cast on 12 stitches, distributed over 3 needles. Join and work in k1p1 rib for 3/8 inch. Continue in plain knitting until the tube measures 7/8 inch.
The heel flap is made on 6 stitches.
Sl 1, k 5, turn. (Put the remaining 2 sts onto the next needle.)
Sl 1, p 5, turn.
Repeat these 2 rows twice more.
Starting on a right-side row,
k3, SSK, turn.
p1, p2tog, turn.
k1, SSK, turn.
p1, p2tog, turn (2 stitches remain).
First round of foot:
k2; pick up and k the 3 slipped stitches along edge of flap; k across top of foot (6 sts); pick up and k the 3 stitches along the other edge of flap. K1 from the next needle onto this one so that the break between needles comes at the center of the bottom of the foot. You now have 8 sole stitches and 6 instep stitches. Adjust so they are on three needles: 5+4(instep)+5.
Knit one round plain. On the next round, dec 1 each side of foot at the spot where the top and sole meet, thus: k3, k2tog, k4 (instep), SSK, k3. You now have 4 stitches on each needle again.
Knit 6 rounds plain. Decrease one stitch each needle (k1, SSK, k1). Knit 2 rounds plain. Decrease one stitch each needle (k1, SSK). Knit one round plain. Cut off the yarn with about 5 inches remaining. Thread this through a tapestry needle and pull the thread through the six stitches. Pull it tight and tie off. Run the end of the thread in and out up the sole of the foot and cut it off.
