Knitted Lace Balloon Cover

by Judy Gibson, June 1997

As a first variant of the Lace Ball pattern, I tried a larger scale in a glittery copper novelty yarn, and blew up a helium balloon inside it. It was a fun idea, but not entirely successful.

Green balloon covered with lace in coppery yarn Instructions for the Balloon Cover:
Follow the pattern for the Basic Lace Ball, using a thin yarn, glittery or pretty, and size 7 or larger (maybe MUCH larger!) needles.

Cast on 48 (12 sets of 4 sts), and do 8, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 sets of (k2, yo, k2tog) for each section. Repeat until you've done 14 sections. Sew up as before, insert balloon, and blow up with helium.

Alas, the first one I tried was too heavy to float. Also, apparently the sharp edges of the glittery yarn caused the balloon to leak, and it deflated within a few hours.

For another experiment, see the Christmas-ornament sized balls with Lace Pattern Bands.
